Trapped

It took me a full minute to realize what had happened.  I looked down into the seemingly infinite portal wondering where exactly my destination was.  Only a minute earlier I had been on the platforms next to the dimension’s opening with Kain and the Sarafan Lord.  When it had finally seemed as though Kain and I had the dirty Hylden cornered I was thrown from the platforms into the abyss.  I was now plunging deeper and deeper into unknown regions of time and space.  All around me brilliant green energy and electricity flashed.  Then I began to notice a different color approaching me.  It was land!  I waited until I was about 100 ft. from hitting the bottom and I started to flap my wings.  I touched down softly on the blackened ground.

I began to examine my surroundings.  All around me was a vast wasteland of blackened earth and dead trees.  A fitting world we provided for the filthy Hylden, I thought.  To my north there stood a city with an enormous tower in the center of it.  It appeared as though the Hylden had made due with their resources.  I heard what sounded like a giant crash of lightning above me and looked up.  The clouds were enveloping the portal. It was closing!  That must mean that Kain had succeeded in defeating the Sarafan Lord and ridding Nosgoth of all Hylden.  But it also meant that I was trapped in this desolate godforsaken place.  If the Hylden found a way to build that dimensional portal maybe I can build one to get back, I thought.

I decided I would fly to the city and have a look around.  I waited until night and then began my trek to the city.  In a matter of minutes I had reached the city gates.  There were two guards at the gate so I decided to go around to an unguarded wall and fly up.  Making my way up to the top of the wall I examined the vast city from my vantage point.  It was, of course, crawling with the detested Hylden.  In the center of the city was the giant tower.  Giant pipes were coming from the tower and running all through the city.  Apparently this city was run by their “glyph magic”.  I gathered that the tower must be the center for all the glyph output and the source of power for the entire city.  If I could turn off the power it would be much easier to search the city secretly.  To get to the tower I needed a disguise first.

I glided down onto the ground softly and began to search for a disguise.  There were many dwellings around me, but I decided it would be best for me to get my disguise off of one of the robed guards rather than break into a house.  I walked swiftly towards the front gate.  At the bottom of the giant doors there was a single armed guard.  I moved quickly and quietly and got into place behind him.  I approached slowly as not to make any noise.  I took one of my claws and swiftly sliced the infidel’s throat open. I pulled the bleeding carcass into the darkness and quickly undressed it.  Though a bit too short for my stature the robe would do at night.  Disguised I quickly made my way down the alley towards the center of the town.

Soon I reached an intersection.  I peeked around the corner of the alley and saw at least fifteen Hylden roaming the streets doing various tasks.  From here forward, I decided, it might be safer to travel along the rooftops.  I flew up to one of the rooftops and slowly made my way towards the center.  When I reached the tower I now noticed that it was glowing green.  The tower itself must be made from the glyphs!  It had four openings, one at each of the cardinal directions. Two Hylden guards protected each opening.  The southern entrance was encased by shadow, so I decided that I would use the south to enter the tower.  I made my way to the building across from the southern entrance.  I grabbed a shingle off of the building I was perched on and lobbed it down to the ground.  As it made a shattering noise the two guards walked over to inspect what had happened.  As they came forward I flew over them and swiftly opened the door to the tower and went in.  With a sigh of relief I turned around.  I walked down the pathway a bit and peeked around the corner.  To my dismay a pair of glowing green eyes stared right back at me.

“Vampire? Here?  What is the meaning of thi….”? As he tried to finish his sentence I plunged my claws deep into his chest and pierced his heart. He gurgled and fell to the floor.  I hurried down the hall so that I could find what I wanted before he was noticed.  I walked down a long corridor filled with scientific notes and glyph pipes lining the hallway.  I walked out of the hall into a huge room filled with instruments and glyph pipe switches.  There were too many switches here to flip without being noticed first.  I would have to find the main source of power.  There was a stairwell on each side of the room.  I decided to take the one on the left to see where it would lead me.  I walked down a flight of stairs and came to a small room with one door.

The door had an hourglass symbol on it.  Could this be what I think it is? Surely it couldn’t be.  I walked through the doors and my mouth fell open at the sight inside the doors.  This was one of Moebius’s time chambers.  How did it get into the Hylden stronghold?  Was Moebius a puppet of the Hylden?  These questions could not be answered here or now.  With the time chamber I did not need to shut off the glyph power.  I decided I would go back to an earlier date when there would be less Hylden, to see if I could figure out if Moebius had put this time chamber here and to find a way home.  I walked towards the controls and put my hands into position.  I guess I would go wherever this would lead me.  I closed my eyes briefly as the room started to swirl around me.

The room stopped swirling and I came to a sudden halt.  I walked to the opening and pushed the door open.  The stairs and tower were gone.  I walked out into the barren wasteland I had seen outside the city before.  I walked out and looked at the time chamber.  It was contained in a small dome.  To the east a much smaller city stood where I had entered the city.  A great sucking sound also came from the east.  I looked into the sky and to my amazement saw the portal.  I must have gotten back into the past, as I had wanted to!  There was no use staying around the time chamber.  I made my way quietly towards the city and the portal.  There was no gate around this smaller version of the Hylden city.  There seemed to be no one in the town.  I walked to center of the town and found a doorway for the portal that Kain had destroyed.  Seeing no one around I decided to walk through it.  Going through the portal, I was surrounded by green light and then with a flash I was on the platforms I had fallen off of earlier.  With a quick look around I realized why the town had been empty.  Gathered on the platforms were hundreds upon hundreds of Hylden.  I flew up to the ceiling quickly to be out of their grasps.  As I was thinking of what to do I heard a dry cackling voice.
“Ha, Janos Audren.  Why what a pleasant surprise.”
“Moebius! I knew when I saw the chamber that you were the Hylden’s puppet.”
“Ignorant fool, I am no puppet to these creatures. On the contrary they are the puppets.  And fate it seems has brought you to serve the same fate it seems.  Hylden, It appears we have found the source of our power for the machine!  This immortal should serve us quite nicely.”
“Do you think I will ever submit to you Moebius?  Do you think I can be broken that easily?”
“It doesn’t matter what you do Janos.  You are mine. I have foreseen it.  Soon you too will call me master.”
“I will never follow anyone who can’t even think up their own lines.  You seem to have…” As I spoke I felt a burst of energy hit my wings.  The energy surged through my bones and immobilized me.  I fell to the ground into a crowd of Hylden.  I was captured.

“Carry him to the underground chamber and hook him up to the machine, but be sure to brainwash him first.  If he knows that this happens, then it doesn’t.”  The Hylden carried me underground and strapped a helmet to my head.  Then one of the Hylden pulled a switch and my consciousness faded.
