Chapter 6
The Answers
|
Angel wasn't sure of anything. He had been led into a room and strapped into some strange device, a black circle, composed of wrought iron. Was Kain coming? He knew that Kain was supposed to wait until after the answers had been given, but had Kain survived Dorn's surprise? If not, Angel was dead. If so, would he arrive in time? Dorn stood in front of Angel. He wore a black robe. No symbols or marks of any kind. The robe seemed to absorb light in the room, making Dorn appear to be a living shadow. "Well Angel, I figure I might as well tell you why you're here. I know I'm breaking some rules, never explain your plan, but at this point, I see no reason not to. The guards here are far from inept, and I do so love this stuff. There are vampire-killing guns aimed at you, you're bound into a steel ring, and I just got finished watching the fight between Kain and my Basilisk, Nagaina. Nagaina won, in case you haven't been taking notes. We have cameras in the room. We saw Kain fall to the ground, limp. Nagaina left him there and is coming to join us now." Angel said nothing. He didn't know if he could break these bindings. He'd try if it came to that. Dorn could be bluffing. He had to know what this was all about. "Why did you kill those people?" "I'm getting to that, Angel. Hash'ak'gik was a dark god, born of darkness, evil, and strife. When he rose, those who supported him were granted great power, and unlike most evil beings, he was a god, his word was binding, so his followers always got what he promised them. Unfortunately, he was defeated, by a group called the Circle of Nine. They were created for the purpose of stopping Hash'ak'gik and defending the world from corruption. He came back though, by possessing a Circle member called Mortanius. Unfortunately, he was defeated, again, this time killed, by a young vampire named Kain, That Kain. You're probably wondering, so I'll tell you, Kain is a vampire. His kind was the first of the blood drinking, dark gods. But he was also the last. When he died, no more vampires could come into existence. You're race is a pathetic attempt to resurrect their power. Judging by your myriad weaknesses, it's obviously a failure. Kain was originally supposed to become guardian of the balance of The Circle. Hash'ak'gik was literally killed, his soul torn apart by Kain's blade, the Soul Reaver. He could never be brought back, or so Kain thought. I shall succeed however. You see Angel, those people you came to avenge are in this room. In cages surrounding it. The spells I used to catch them were incredibly powerful, stealing them from their lives instantly. Unfortunately, it tends to leave conspicuous markings in the areas, but in this day and age, no one could know what they meant. In a few minutes time, I'll open those cages, and another set of cages, containing vampires, these vampires are the reason crime has been so low lately. I captured them all, they haven't fed in about a week, really. So I'll release them on the humans. The bloodshed will flood this room with hate, fear, and madness. It will be beautiful. The ring you're reclining in was made in a spirit forge, the most corrupt forge in the world. Many dark artifacts came from this forge. It will channel that darkness into you. The last piece, however, was something in which Hash'ak'gik could be reborn. A vampire, as they are today, are demons, souless demons. You however, are different, you have a soul, yet the body of a demon. That soul has been darkening over these past months. Yes, Angel, it was our doing that sent you on you're crusade, that compelled you to fire your friends, your only barrier between true darkness. And you are ready now. Hash'ak'gik will be reborn through you, re-created in fact. He will again rise to power, and this time, there is no Circle to stop him. The world will be re-created in his image, light will become dark, cruelty will become justice, our ways, will be the way of the world. At that, a slithering sound was heard entering the room. Angel turned his head in it's direction. What appeared to be a giant snake was entering through a tunnel to the side. Dorn spoke, "Ah, Nagaina, how are you? I trust you've finished off that little nuisance?" The snake moved around Dorn's feet, seemingly in affection. It's eyes closed. Angel knew what it was through his old texts. A basilisk, one of the most dangerous creatures in existence. Dorn walked over to a wall. Their was a lever stuck in it. "Now is the time. Let the blood be spilled, let the power be unleashed, and let the father of darkness be born unto the world!" Dorn pulled the lever. The walls around Angel moved, squares of stone moving out from the walls as though pushed, then sliding up the walls, revealing small rooms within. Angel struggled in his bonds, pulled on them, strained, the bonds bent, but did not break, As though forged in Hell itself. Dorn had left the room, probably not willing to be a victim himself. Angel saw people, fathers standing over wives and children, women crying, children paralyzed with fear. He didn't just see it, he felt it! He felt the fear, felt the pain, from each of them, individually and all together! As though their feelings were drawn into him. A child looked into his eyes, as afraid of Angel as he was of his surroundings. Angel could see himself through that child's eyes, afraid of himself. A second set of doors opened, the sensation hit Angel in waves, instantly he felt anger, rage, hunger. He couldn't see behind him, but he knew what it was. Vampires, rushing forth from their cells, seeing human prey and ready to take their meals. Angel ripped at his chains, his eyes seeing through a haze of red. He didn't know whether to save the humans or feed on them. He wanted both, he felt their needs dwelling within them. He couldn’t make a decision. His thoughts coming in mad strings barely comprehensible. He shut his eyes, trying to shut out the sound. Not even his own thoughts. Those things are coming to kill my children! I've gotta have something to eat! I'm dying, Fresh kills! Help me daddy! Don't let them hurt me! Get away from my son, you Freak! What an idiot. I won't let them get Billy! Give them to me! That one died easily, I should do this more often. My god, another monster! They're everywhere! I don't even think that one saw me. Wait! What is that! Help me! Please dear God help me! Just one look, that's all it takes. Mary, grab Jenny and hide! I won't abandon you! This venom kills so quickly. I will feed again! Yes! No! Help! Wait, there was something else there, another voice, calm, collected. As though completely at ease. Angel fought the pain and opened his eyes. There were only a few vampires left. Two, maybe three dead humans, and there, right there the source of the calm thoughts. The basalisk, moving from vampire to vampire. Biting, looking into their eyes, it was dropping them like flies. Then, the chaos ended, the humans all cowered together in fear, the vampires all dead. Dorn stood against a wall, completely baffled. "Nagaina! What the hell did you do!? We'll have to start all over now! Do you have any idea how long this took to prepare!" Dorn pulled a knife from his robe and stabbed at the snake. The snake dodged the blow easily. It stood up on it's body as high as it could. Then it twitched, spasmed, hissed violently, and collapsed to the ground. Dorn looked in horror. Angel was equally confused, though more relieved. Angel's heightened hearing picked it up first. Footsteps, walking into the room. Through the same tunnel the basalisk had come from. From out of the shadows, Kain emerged. His sword drawn. A cruel smile on his lips. Dorn stood in disbelief. "You can't be alive! No one has ever defeated a basalisk!" Kain walked towards him, "You're right, I couldn't best it. So I cheated. I wracked it's spirit, took it's place. Terrific fun." Dorn stared in shock. His mouth moved as though to say something. Kain lunged forward and buried the Soul Reaver into Dorn' heart. A crackle of black energy, like liquid shadows, and Dorn burst apart at the seams. His body flying apart as though someone had filled him with dynamite. Kain sheathed the Soul Reaver.
He turned and looked at Angel, with a satisfied look on his face. "Now
that, Angelus, is how we had fun in my day."
