Life of a Nobleman

By Albert Wesker

The sun had disappeared many hours ago in the west; and the vast land of Nosgoth was dark, eerie and silent enough to give the people uncomfortable and disturbing feelings about being outside of their homes. Everyone was in their houses except for the brave, loyal, wise and so-called "righteous" Vampire Hunters. They were out scouting everywhere in search of any bloodthirsty monster they despised and their only thoughts were to "kill it in a manner that will make the wretch suffer terribly before finally dying." With an unknown population of vampires, werewolves, zombies and other horrific creatures roaming about at large everywhere in Nosgoth, life just couldn't get any worse.
Just hours before the sun had set, a solitary man dressed in silver armour, carrying a large bag on his back, and armed with a broad sword came walking into the village in the tiny village known as Ziegsturhl, located somewhere South-West of the Pillars of Nosgoth. The man was called Kain and he had come to the village to spend the night after a very long and hard day of travelling. He found an inn that he found cozy enough for him and stayed in his room for a while, writing accounts of his travels in his journal. As he wrote he was thinking about what to do after he had finished. Finally, he decided to go to the local pub to have a drink and, maybe, have a chat with someone. Strangely, he seemed to be the only guest.

Kain was a nobleman from the finest city in all of Nosgoth, Coorhagen. This city was home to the wealthiest people of Nosgoth and Kain's father, a great baron, was one of them. Kain grew up in the world of wealth and aristocracy, surrounded by peasants and servants but his folks were never really around for him too often because of their work and their lifestyles. His father travelled many times to Willendorf City for important work and would stay awhile to enjoy the company of his friends and celebrate the success of their work. His mother, a wealthy lady, was always out with her friends and she usually went her husband to Willendorf on special occasions such as religious ceremonies or as guests at parties at King Ottmar's Court. Because of all this, Kain grew up being cared for by the servants.
Though his life was rather empty, he seemed to be happy most of the time and was always careful about making decisions and did the right choice of anything. He seemed to possess some kind of special gift in doing right things, except when he was very angry and was unable to think clearly. Despite the fact that he was a very arrogant and selfish individual who didn't really care about others, he usually managed to talk politely and calmly to others and never in his life got into any kind of argument. He was successful in getting into conversations but all that he really loved to talk about was adventure, wealth, and most of all: power. Soon people were keeping distant from him fearing him for his arrogance. He eventually became famous in Coorhagen for his character and his parents didn't seem to mind him being feared. They used to: "The only reason people have to fear our son is because he has great character and virtues."
During Kain's childhood life he was always fascinated to hear and be told stories and legends of mysterious and mythical topics. One of his servants was a gypsy and it was she that told him most of the legends of Nosgoth, having lived in the land for years. Kain's favourite stories were about the Pillars of Nosgoth where all the wonders and secrets of the Universe were said to be known by the Guardians. However, she warned him that even though many people could see them sometimes from a distance, no one should ever attempt to go to them, for every single person that had tried to go never returned. There were rumours that only creatures of supernatural power could ever use the teleporters to get to the Pillars.
The stories that he worried about the most were of vampires, werewolves and all the other monsters that "shared" the country with the humans. He may have to grown to hate and fear them but at the same time he felt sorry for their suffering and being hunted down and slaughtered in bloodthirsty manners by the legendary vampire hunters known in history as The Sarafan. The only vampire story he was interested in was of the great vampires Janos Audron and Vorador. The latter was said to have murdered six members of the Circle of Nine (but best known as the Pillars of Nosgoth), and caused the world to become corrupted. However, the servant told young Kain, no one really knew the real reason as to how the world became corrupted.
When Kain was eighteen years old, he was sent to a University in the city of Stahlberg, where he finished his education to become a great nobleman like his father (though he didn't really care about him or his mother because he never really knew them well enough to do so).  He reached the highest level and was the most respected student in Stahlberg. Kain was not only a highly confident, independent, and intelligent student but also a highly trained and skilled swordsman tutored by former knights of King Ottmar's Court. His fighting moves were swift and he fought like wild fire, thus he became more arrogant while also more strong and brave.
During his life Kain was not very interested in women very much for he believed that women only existed to do housework, give birth, care and raise children, and look after men. Being a very proud person Kain despised all this and had no intention of ever getting married at all, thus he never tried to find any girl while staying in Stahlberg for three years.

Then one day one of the worst incidents in Nosgoth's history occurred. A strange and powerful disease struck Coorhagen and its citizens started dying in ways that made them suffer greatly before their final moments. The number of cases were small at first.  But as time went by more and more people began to show the symptoms of the strange disease, that the people had decided to call the Plague or Black Death. No one could find a cause nor a cure for it and eventually started believing that Nosgoth's vampires and other undead creatures were responsible as a punishment for hunting them down, destroying their sanctuaries and killing them behind the mask of righteousness. Soon news of the disease spread out to the rest of Nosgoth and great panic and fear exploded.
Due to these uncontrollable circumstances, King Ottmar himself ordered the people of Vasserbünde, the closest village to Coorhagen, to build a great standing stone to block the only the path that led to Coorhagen so that its infected citizens would not be able to leave and spread the Plague. The standing stone was built in no time and the people from the great and wealthy city were doomed to die miserably trapped in their own city. The stone shut Coorhagen off from the rest of Nosgoth and all the people began to calm down again and eventually stopped worrying about any possible infection. What happened to all the people in Coorhagen remained a mystery and no one would dare to go near to find out. Some time after the standing stone was built, all the people of Nosgoth came to the conclusion that everyone was dead and they were now at peace from their suffering. Rumour had it that vampires and zombies were now using the damned city as a sanctuary. Since vampires and zombies were already dead, they would have no problem in making a city littered with dead people (that died from a powerful and unknown disease) all over the place their home.

Unfortunately, Kain, now twenty-one years of age and a graduate from the best University of Stahlberg, did not receive the news in time of what had happened to his home. He had left Stahlberg just hours before the news finally arrived and was on his way home to see his friends and family again. He arrived at Vasserbünde by carriage only to find the great big standing stone blocking the path to his city and then struck down in shock after hearing everything from a few guards. After a while, Kain managed to recover from his shock and decided to go to a tiny village called Ziegsturhl, which was the farthest place from Coorhagen. He would spend the night there and then next day would go to Willendorf City to start working and inherit his family's fortune. He could have gone to Nachtholm, Steinchencröe, or even stayed in Vasserbünde but he didn't want to be anywhere near his Plagued home. So armed with his sword and with a large backpack, he set off to Ziegsturhl on foot. Kain arrived safely and this where our story began and ends.

Kain finished writing in his journal, picked his sword up, left the inn and headed straight for the local pub.

Unknown to the human Kain, he was born to become the successor to Ariel, Guardian of the Pillar of Balance but would not be successful in doing so. Instead, he would be brutally murdered right outside the pub by a group of peasant swordsmen and sent to Hell. The Necromancer Mortanius, the Guardian of the Pillar of Death, would visit him in Hell and offer him the chance to return to Nosgoth once again as a strong vampire. Kain would accept; and after slaying his false assassins he would be forced to steel himself for an epic quest of vengeance that would drag him to the depths of depravity. Ultimately, he would have the will to damn the world and rule it as Lord Kain, the Prince of Darkness, with the Pillar of Balance as his monumental throne, and possess the greatest dark magic in the world.
