The game begins with a monologue from Kain as he recalls his past and explains exactly what his newfound purpose is.  As he talks, images from past games will show, allowing players to familiarize themselves to the elaborate storyline.  The only new images will begin on the third paragraph, as Kain sees the prophecy of Dumuzi.  Since this being is derived from the Sumerian god, all the writing will be Sumerian-like.

            Burdened with hope, I devoted myself to nothing other than the salvation of Nosgoth.  Poisoned as it was, it began to rot and fall way into cataclysms deep inside the Earth.  Memories of a lush land waiting to be conquered stung my soul deeply.  For so long I avoided the machinations of others; all grand schemes made to either manipulate or destroy me.  Yet, my continued survival no longer abated my distaste for the evil emanating from this place.  Raziel, my glorious general, stripped me of such arrogance, leaving his captured entity in the Soul Reaver as compensation.  It was with this device he enabled me to see the cancer eating away at my empire.  The Wheel of Fate, that false Elder God, was revealed in all its morbidity.  This…thing had manipulated my ancestors, their sworn enemies, the petty humans, and even me to pursue its desires.  I feel such the fool as I am now able to see how I always acted in its favor.  That is until Raziel’s sacrifice enabled me to wound it.  The great, all-seeing Wheel of Fate could not with all its powers foresee my vengeance striking at its imperfections.  That was when hope filled my being and compelled me to heal the dying Nosgoth.
With Moebius’ Timestreaming Device, I began the search for the Elder God.  Decade after decade, century after century, I found not another hint of that parasite’s whereabouts.  Even timestreaming to locations I had met him before ended in failure, as something would always prevent us from meeting.  I suspected these unfortunate coincidences to be the work of my enemy, who is said to be mindful of both the past and the future.  Jaded by such an idea, I decided to travel to the point of Raziel’s resurrection, the second one anyway.  Since it was he who placed me on such a quest, I theorized that this muse might again inspire me, allowing my mind to rethink all possibilities.  What nostalgia I felt as I saw the tattered Reaver of Souls crawl from the depths of the Abyss!  Melchiah, then Zephon, and all the rest fell one after another till he finally reached my past self.  The tension between us was thicker that I realized.  Had fate moved in his favor only but an inch, our story would have ended there.  However, the favor was all mine, thus allowing Raziel and my past self to be transported through time.
The battle was over, but I felt no new wave of inspiration.  I was fortunate enough to experience an earthquake soon after their departure, one that ripped through Moebius’ fortress, creating radical shifts in time.  And then in front of me, a bend in time revealed ancient scripture praising a being named Dumuzi.  It was the God of Rebirth, who appointed itself judge and executioner over what should live or die.  I half expected to see the Wheel of Fate inscribed in the middle, but there was no other image than the legendary Forbidden Island located in the Lake of Tears.  Within moments, the window was gone, and I was left with a trail to another cryptic being.  The thought of groveling to one False God to aid killing another was sickening, but I had no other choice.  I would sail to the Forbidden Island and hope whatever I found could give me some assistance in crumbling the Wheel of Fate.
