Chapter 3: Deceptions

Kain gazed at the celing. "Raziel, you have grown much stronger, and Rasona, son of Raziel and survivor of the Razielim, you are a mystery. I recieved no warnings of you from Moebius. Maybe I shouldn't have killed the Time Streamer after all..." His musing was broken off by someone opening the Chronoplast's doors. A Turelim vampire walked in. "Master Kain, my father Turel has arranged for Raziel to arrive here, in exchange for his freedom of choice in this whole affair of yours, O Mighty One. Do you agree to my father's terms Master?" Kain was silent for a long time before answering. "Yes. Turel may do as he wishes in my little game. You may leave now." Kain dismissed the vampire with a wave of his hand. "Soon Raziel. Soon we shall be together again." I watched Turel carefuly. He seemed to be asleep, but he could have simply been meditating. His breathing filled the chamber, a deep, drawn out sound. I decided he was sleeping, and walked from the room. All of a sudden, Turel's eyes opened. "Who are you?" He obviously hadn't recognised me. "Do you not recognise me Turel?" "Hmmm... Oh yes. your the little vampire who likes to think he can waltz around my kindom, and slaughter my children for his own training. Ha! You should not have come here child." His use of the word child infuriated me. "Child?! You dare to call me a child. I am not a child! I am thousands of years old!" "And I am a Million years old. Your life span is but a flicker compared to mine. You could not possibly even compare to me. I am superior to you in every aspect." As I prepared to stike out at him, Kain appeared. "Enough children. Turel, I gave you freewill in this, but I need this vampire. Don't kill him, or I shall see to it that you shall suffer a fate a thousand times worse than Raziel's." "Very well Kain. Rasona, you may go. Here." Turel pulled a lever at the side of his throne. A section of the wall slid away, revealing a dark flight of steps. "Go little Rasona. Complete whatever grand plan Kain has for you. Do not show yourself around here again, or I shall gladly suffer a "fate a thousand times worse than Raziel's." just to be rid of you." I expected Kain to stike Turel for his insolence, but he just laughed, then dematerialised. I turned and walked into the darkness. AN HOUR LATER: Raziel looked at the star filled portal. This was the fourth one he had come across in the last few minutes. An image took form. It showed him standing in a circle with Kain's emblem carved into it. Kain stood facing him, and Raziel had the Soul Reaver poised ready to strike at Kain. "My mind reels with conflict... Does Kain await me moments from now, or in some century yet to come?" he asked himself. He ran down the winding corridor, murals of Angels holding swords carved into the walls. Another portal appeared around the bend. To his horror, it showed him stiking down Ariel, the spirit that haunted the Pillars of Nosgoth. Her energy wass bound into the Soul Reaver's blade, giving it a yellow blade. "This cannot be! What madness does this scene portend? Kain must think me credulous to suffer these lies!" Raziel doubled his pace, sensing each step brought him closer to Kain. A final portal appeared. This one shower Raziel gazing out somewhere, armed with a black and red Soul Reaver. "Is this phantasm a conjuration of my mind, or an echo of future events?" He now sensed Kain was only moments away. He ran down the corridor, and saw it open into a wider corridor, sloping downwards. A door leading to a warp gate was to Raziel's left, and after activating this, Raziel ran down the corridor, which led to a large door with a face carved onto it. Raziel opened the door and stepped through. Kain's voice cut through the darkness. "At last. I must say, I’m disappointed in your progress. I imagined you would be here sooner. Tell me, did it trouble you to murder your brothers?" Kain asked "Did it trouble you when you ordered me into the abyss? Raziel replied, venom in his voice. "No - I had faith in you. In your ability to hate. In your self-righteous indignation." "Lies. You cannot have foreseen all of this." Raziel anwered. "Eternity is relentless, Raziel. When I first stole into this chamber, centuries ago, I did not fathom the true power of knowledge. To know the future, Raziel... to see its paths and streams tracing out into the infinite. As a man, I could never have contained such forbidden truths... But each of us is so much more than we once were. Gazing out across the planes of possibility, do you not feel with all your soul how we have become like gods? And as such, are we not indivisible? As long as a single one of us stands, we are legion... That is why, when I must sacrifice my children to the void, I can do so with a clear heart..." Kain finished." "Very poetic, Kain, but in the end, you offer no more than a convenient rationalization for your crimes." Kain teleported to the middle of the room, a small circular area with two levels above it. "These chambers offer insight for those patient enough to look - in your haste to find me, perhaps you have not gazed deeply enough. Our futures are predestined - Moebius foretold mine a millennium ago. We each play out the parts fate has written for us. We are compelled ineluctably down pre-ordained paths. Free will, is an illusion." Raziel responded to Kain's explenations by changing the subject. "I have been to the Tomb of Sarafan, Kain. Your dirty secret is exposed. How could you, transform a Sarafan priest into a vampire?" "How could I not? One must keep his friends close, Raziel, and his enemies even closer. Can you grasp the absurd beauty of the paradox? We are the same. Sarafan, and vampire. With our holy wars, our obsession with Nosgoth’s domination... Who better to serve me than those whose passion transcends all notions of good and evil?" "I will not applaud your clever blasphemy. The Sarafan were saviors, defending Nosgoth from the corruption that we represent. My eyes are opened, Kain. I find no nobility in the unlife you rudely forced on my unwilling corpse." "You may have uncovered your past, but you know nothing of it. You think the Sarafan were noble, altruistic? Don’t be simple. Their agenda was the same as ours." "You are lost in a maze of moral relativism, Kain. These apparitions and portents, what game are you playing now?" "Destiny is a game, is it not? And now, you await my latest move..." Kain teleported around, with
Raziel following him close behind. Kain would charge his lightning, and
Raziel would try to attack him with the Soul Reaver. Sometimes Kain would
strike Raziel with lightning, and other times Raziel would hit Kain with
the Soul Reaver. After Raziel hit Kain three times, Kain retreated over
to a now activated star portal. "You nearly had me, Raziel. But this is
not where, or how, it ends. Fate promises more twists before this drama
unfolds completely." As he finished speaking, he turned and retreated through
the star portal. As Raziel was about to follow, he heard the Elder warn
him. "Be warned, Raziel. Once you cross this threshold, you are beyond
my influence." Rasona was hiding, watching the battle. As Kain ran through
the portal, the Elder spoke to Rasona. "Rasona, Raziel is going to follow
Kain. You must follow him. You will need to find Moebius. He will know
what to do."
