As Kain stood, watching Raziel slip back into the spirit realm, anger flooded
his mind as he finally figured out the trap set by Moebius. As if still
looking into the air, yet at the same time seeing what was in his mind
before, he roars in anger. With a swoop of his hand, he retrieved
the Soul Reaver from where he had let it drop when it was pulled from Raziel.
He held his beloved blade by the demonic hilt. It warmed his three
fingered hand and soothed his soul. With Raziel returning his soul
to it, in one way or another, its old power had returned. The soul
within it was fresh and doubled the power.
A voice tickled the back of his mind. “Well Kain, it seems my puppets
never fail me. Than again, you always were as good a puppet as that freak
of a lieutenant of yours’.”
Kain growled as the rage shot out from him. “Moebius, you are a withering
old fool to think you have won! I will track you down and rip your heart
out from that bony chest of yours’ and hold it as it still
beats in front of your pain filled eyes!”
Moebius did not give a moment hesitation before laughing. “You think you
can get to me so easily. Now with everything still falling into plan,
I will surely make your death come true, vampire! This time it will
be no simple sword in the back, it will be long and painful. You
will suffer for…” The voice ceased. Kain’s eyes grew wide as he spun
around, Soul Reaver burning for blood. In front of him floated a
familiar form. Ariel, the ghoulish form of her half fleshy-half bone face,
levitated before him.
“Why do you leave your pillars, you irritating memory?” Kain swung
his hand to move her out of his way as he walked to the entrance of the
mural room. As expected, his hand passed through her, habit to push
the weaker out of his way never dies. She began to float next to
him as he stormed from the round room. “Must you continue to haunt
me?”
Her one eye star straight ahead, her attention set not on Kain, but what
was ahead of them both, so it seemed. “Kain, I can no longer stay at the
pillars. New terrors swallow souls in this world. They were released
by what you and Raziel had done to us. The spirit realm has been
torn open. A gaping wound has been ripped and they seep out.
What Moebius has had you done is worst than the thousands of years you
reigned upon us. As you would treat the humans as only food for your
hunger, these Terrors now do to vampires and humans alike.”
Kain came to a halt. He turned, looking with a slight smirk on his
hideous face at the floating spirit. “By any chance, do you really have
an idea as to what you want me to do about this? If you have no solution
for this problem yet, you should not have confronted me right now.
I am in no mood for spirits, or Raziel. Moebius has gone into hiding
I gather and I must figure a way to get past that bloody staff of his.”
“Raziel will guide you,” She said straight out, “as will the Soul Reaver.
You must trust in them both.”
Kain scowled. “I, trust that waste of a vampire? Truly you think
yourself crazy, correct? He betrayed-“
“You betrayed him Kain. This you cannot deny. You sent him
into that abyss for surpassing your evolution!” She now stared at him with
one eye and with the dark socket of her left. “Still you do not evolve.
You knew this and feared it!”
Kain clenched the Soul Reaver tightly. He narrowed his eyes in thought.
“You are dead, then where is Raziel?” His voice was low and irritated.
“I
will pass over to find him. Do not leave this room or I will have
to seek you out once more. It will be better to bar that door and
wait in the mural room till I return with him.” She then disappeared.
Once again, Kain was alone, all but the Soul Reaver and Raziel’s human
form, lifeless on the floor. He took her advice quickly into thought,
slamming the chamber doors closed. He dropped the bar and slowly
backed away. The sounds of heavy boots and armor clanged down
the hall. There were at least two dozen of them. As strong
as Kain was, he had no chance of fending off two dozen well armed
men and possibly a few mages.
With the idea that they actually may break through, he looked for a place
to hide. “There.” He whispered, looking at dark place on the second
level. With ease, he jumped to the second floor. Two doors
were on this level as well. Both had already been blocked by bars though,
making Kain’s life a little easier. “Enter now you worms! I will
slaughter you like pigs.” He howled.
Banging came from the door for several minutes, then silence. He
stood in the darkness waiting. For a good thirty minutes silence
had to hold. A tingling feeling ran down his arm as the room seemed
to shift for an instant. Looking down in the center of the room stood
Raziel. He stood, starring at his lifeless body with no envy what
so ever. “Come down Kain. It is time we find Moebius and end this
game once and for all.” He said calmly. “After, we can settle our issues.”
Raziel looked to Kain in the shadows. Kain gave a dark smile and
ran from his shadows and leapt to the ground. He landed, feet slamming
on the ground.
“Then what are we waiting for. Let’s let our guests in!” He smiled,
his black heart pounding in utter excitement. Kain kicked the bar
from the door and hoped back, Soul Reaver blazing with fury. Nothing
happened. No Sarafan charged in with swords swinging in the air,
no mages firing balls of fire to scorch the two. Nothing at all happened.
The two opened the door, stepping out. Blood painted the walls, floor,
and ceiling. Chunks of flesh lay on the floor with an occasional
slab of metal. As they walked a few body parts sprawled a little further
down the hall indicated that what had transpired was not finished by the
door.
Raziel looked on knowing. “That old god must be able to let out everything
he couldn’t before. Not just those demons I fought, but many more.
That is why it took me so long to return to this world. All the spirits
had made their way out, returning to the world of the living. Kain,
they seek their bodies. If they return to their bodies, they will
become fiends. Once this happens, all Hell will break loose as the
boundaries are torn down for good!” Raziel summoned his phantom Reaver.
“You should have let me die!”
“That I should have, Raziel, but now we must do what is tasked ahead of
us. We must find Moebius.”
Raziel’s eyes narrowed a bit in a mocking way. “Have you already begun
to lose the intellect you so go by, Kain? Isn’t it obvious? Moebius is
returning to Janos Audron with the heart. Don’t you see! Once he
places the heart back, we will have lost and Moebius will have won.
We must make it to the keep, now!” In agreement, the two took off with
super speed vampires are known to have. Finding an open window of
the castle, they looked down to the frozen lake.
“Hold onto my legs, Kain. I will float us down. We will have
to climb to the mouth of the strong hold. There is no other choice
since you can descend into the spirit realm.” Kain looked up, ready
to question why he would have to. Raziel leapt from the window, taking
hold to the torn wings that are what now keeps him in flight for only short
moments. Kain quickly jumped after him, taking hold of his ankles.
His sudden weight made Raziel lose grip to one of his wings. After
losing grip of one, he frantically tried to not plummet to his surely bloody
demise. They crashed onto the icy surface of the lake with out falling
through. This was Raziel’s full intent, seeing as he wasn’t sure
of the stableness Kain had to water. The ice surface was no better
to the halls of the castle. Bodies were spread out and divided by
many feet of blood and entrails. From were they stood, they saw the
mouth of the cave. A dark form moved into view. The form was
massive in size and seemed to have noticed them.
“Well
Raziel, it seems we were expected.” The figure dropped from the mouth
of the cave, landing on the ice, breaking through with an explosive splash.
The two unlikely comrades took a few paces back. The massive creature
pulled itself from the water and up onto the ice. Intently, water
froze to its hideous hide. The creature was not like the ones that
Raziel had encountered from the elder god. This creature was at the
least two times bigger. Four arms protruded from its torso. The head
was that of a bull like the others, but with horns running down its spine
and along a serpent like tale. It howled to the sky. Kain backed
away from Raziel. “I see this will be difficult.”
Raziel turned quickly, grabbing Kain’s wrist. “Don’t you dare run, you
spineless bastard! In your age you grow weak of mind! We can take him down
if we do this together.” Raziel summoned his wraith blade once again,
releasing Kain. Kain slowly nodded.
“You are right, Raziel.” He turned his blood lust filled eyes to the beast.
“You will be returned to the pit you spawned!” The beast howled with laughter.
The two charged him. Raziel moved with lightening speed to confuse
the beast. He took some swings with the wraith blade, missing the
beast each time with a curse.
Kain moved in with skill, dodging the beast’s swings with arms and spiked
tale. He slashed with the Soul Reaver, cutting deep into the side
of the creature. It spun around enraged, throwing Kain off balance.
As Kain fell to the floor, the Soul Reaver still sucked on the blood of
the beast. No matter what, the creature could not pull the irritating
blade from its side. This was Raziel’s opening. Leaping into
the air, he directed the wraith blade for the back of the demon’s head.
As he was about to make the final blow, the creature quickly turned to
him, back handing him against the mountain keep. Raziel fell heavy.
His wraith blade vanished as his eyes slowly closed, allowing darkness
to take over him. This time he didn’t go back to the spirit realm.
No, he couldn’t.
As the beast moved to finish Raziel, Kain snuck up behind. Pulling
the Soul Reaver from the side, he gained the attention of his enemy.
As it turned to stare at him, he slowly backed up, one hand held out. “Now
listen. Let me talk to your master and maybe we can make a deal.
I will give you Raziel, and you can let me go. I will leave this
time and go further back, as not to be in your way.” The monster growled.
“Take the demon vampire! He is yours!” The creature laughed and opened
its maw.
“The vampire is already mine, Kain. You are the one I wish to destroy!
You are who which plagues my mind.” The voice of the elder god slipped
out heavy.
“I know that voice.” Kain injected. “Mortanius, it is you! Altered
by time, but I can never forget it. I will not allow you any joy of my
defeat!”
The creature laughed heavily. “So you think you will win, Kain. I
created you, so I will destroy you!” With all his anger, Kain moved
with more speed then he had ever before. With a swift slash of the
Soul Reaver, he took the beast down. Its head dropped to the cold
ice, splattering about.
“No one will ever defeat me! Definitely not you, Mortanius!” Kain
looked to the opening of the cave, than to Raziel, who lay passed out against
the mountain wall. “So I will finish Moebius off again, as I had before,
with out you Raziel.” The old transformation he had failed to show
any of the other vampires he spawned began to kick in. He transformed
into the small winged rat, his bat form, and flew to the opening of the
cave were Moebius was sure to be waiting.
Landing
on the platform and transforming back, he stood in front of the open chest
Janos Audron. Next to him stood Moebius, black heart in his left
hand and the dreaded staff in the other. “Well Kain, come to finally die?”
He snickered, tightening his grip on the powerful stave.
Kain smirked. “You think so? Well, once I kill you and pull that
heart from your lifeless fingers, we will see in your vision of my death
finally comes true!” Moebius began to hold his staff up to quickly
deal with Kain. As he attempted to summon the powers of the vampire
killing staff, he was taken a back.
“No! This is impossible! The staff has never lost power before!” He looked
down at Janos. “How could you know a spell to counter the staff’s magic?
You fool! You would have been brought back to life!”
Kain was quickly on Moebius, hand clenched around his neck, Soul Reaver
pushed up against his stomach. “Tell me why you would resurrect the vampire,
Moebius!”
“Simple, Kain.” Raziel’s voice came from the edge of the cliff as he pulled
himself up. “He wishes to do what should be left alone. He
wishes to bring back a vampire from the dead to completely rip the wound
we have made open. He thinks the elder god will give him eternal
power. You twit!” Raziel took Moebius from Kain, carrying him by
the shoulders, struggling and shouting to the edge of the cave mouth. “You
thought you would be able to use me twice! You old waste of a man! Your
time has finally come.” Dropping Moebius on the very edge of the cliff,
so he is not able to run, Raziel summoned the wraith blade. “Well, no more
of us shall be used as your puppets.” Holding the heart up, he shoves it
in Raziel’s face, pushing the demon vampire back.
“I will not give you the satisfaction of killing me, Raziel. But
now, with the blood of the black heart on you, you will still do as I intended.”
Raziel quickly tore the cloth around his neck from his body, whipping the
blood off. “To late vampire, you who cannot be resurrected will be the
one to bring the elder god back into your world!” Kain advanced just as
Moebius jumped from the cliff. Both watched as the mad man laughed
until he slammed against the ice far below.
Kain starred now at Raziel who began to glow. Raziel looked at his
hands which gave a yellow light. “What is happening, Raziel?”
“I am the gatekeeper for the elder god and his minions! Moebius has used
me one last time to open the path for pure chaos! Kain, you must end this
now! Destroy me before it is too late!”
