There! Just before him lay the doors to the Chronoplast, and from there…Kain! At last! Raziel flung the doors wide and strode within. ‘Show yourself Kain!’ No reply. The only sounds to be heard were the ceaseless ticking and whirring of countless dials, endlessly turning for unknown purposes. High above, the huge orbs of the room’s main device spun around and around like a minute universe. ‘Kain?’ Raziel strode into the chamber, looking for his adversary and finding no one. ‘Hello?’ He called again. Apart from him the chamber was quite empty. Either Kain had forgotten his cue or he was at the wrong Chronoplast. Not fazed by this development he naturally resorted to the only one he could call on. Not the Elder god of course! He distrusted the nature of this particular deity. He would call on more powerful gods, the shapers of this universe, masters of his and Nosgoth’s destiny. Reaching down he pulled a tiny Nokia mobile from the hidden compartment on what was left of his armoured boots. It always pays to be prepared, he thought. He checked the batteries, glad to find them fully charged and the mobile in perfect working order, even after the dip into the Lake of the Dead. Worth every gold piece, he mused. Dialling was no problem, even with his clawed fingers, and he waited patiently. ‘Eidos Entertainment’ the voice on the other side spoke smartly ‘may I help you?’ ‘May I speak with the almighty please?’ Raziel held the mobile to the place where his voice emerged. After all this time even he couldn’t figure out how he spoke without a voice box, muscles or a lower jaw for that matter. ‘Who may I say is calling?’ The voice questioned him. ‘Raziel.’ Raziel replied ‘I want to talk to her about my…appointment with Kain.’ ‘Just one moment please.’ Raziel waited. Speaking with the almighty always took time and he sat on one of the higher ledges, legs dangling and kicking at the wall while he waited. At least the almighty wants me around for a while, he thought, and wondered if he could still whistle. He had never been much of a whistler during his service to Kain, perhaps because there had never been anything to whistle about. ‘Hello?’ A female voice spoke. ‘Almighty!’ Raziel found himself suddenly genuflecting out of habit ‘I just called to enquire…’ ‘Its about Kain, right?’ The almighty asked ‘he’s not at the blessed Chronoplast is he?’ ‘No almighty,’ Raziel rose and looked about to ensure this ‘I was led to believe he would be here. Perhaps it is I who am mistaken?’ ‘No,’ the almighty reassured him ‘you’re at the right spot.’ Raziel could hear shuffling of papers from the other side ‘give me a minute while I make enquiries.’ ‘Certainly.’ Raziel replied and was put on hold. This was a nice song! He tried to sing along to it and wondered if he could find some human minstrels to play it for him. He committed the name to memory: Girl from Ipanema. It must be a nice place, this Ipanema, he thought wistfully, wondering where on Nosgoth it could be and how he could get there. ‘You there?’ the almighty’s voice interrupted the music. ‘Certainly almighty,’ Raziel replied ‘you have found Kain?’ ‘He left a post-it note on my desk with a “gone fishing” written on it and some numbers.’ the almighty sounded rather displeased ‘Seems he’s gone through the Chronoplast’s portal.’ ‘It was my understanding that this particular event would occur after our encounter, not before.’ Raziel spoke. ‘Guess your best bet’s to go after him then,’ the almighty’s voice shrugged ‘nobody else here knows where he’s gone to and they’re too busy with Defiance’s release.’ ‘I have not the means or the knowledge on how to use this device, almighty.’ ‘No probs!’ the almighty reassured him ‘there’s a manual in the room. It’s behind one of the out of place blocks on the lower walls.’ ‘I will look for it now almighty, excuse me.’ Raziel jumped off the ledge and searched. More blessed blocks! Raziel swore under his breath. If I see one more blessed block… Sure enough, one block was more worn out than the rest. On moving it aside Raziel found a rather thick tome entitled: “time travelling devices for dummies, version 2.1. Edited by Mobius, G. of T. ”. ‘I have found it almighty!’ Raziel informed the voice on the other side. ‘Check out page three fifty.’ ‘The “Redial” feature for this particular device?’ Raziel asked ‘That’s the one!’ the almighty sounded very pleased ‘just follow the instructions and remember to put the book back before you use the portal.’ ‘I always thought…’ ‘What?’ The almighty enquired. ‘I always though Kain carried the knowledge within his head.’ ‘Yeah right!’ the almighty spoke with sarcasm ‘ever seen him pick up a book?’ ‘No,’ Raziel replied ‘not during my lifetime anyway.’ ‘Exactly.’ The almighty concluded ‘be a good lad, go after him and find out what he’s up to. Call me back when you do.’ ‘I will, almighty.’ Raziel replied and hung up. The instructions were simple and the book full of diagrams. And after all the respect I held for Kain’s knowledge, he grumbled and pushed the final lever into place. After returning the book to its place Raziel jumped to the now active portal and stood there for a moment. I hope I set everything correctly, he thought with worry; otherwise I might end up with less skin than what I already have. Raziel! Raziel paused on hearing the Elder god’s voice inside his head. ‘I am on an errand for the almighty,’ Raziel spoke aloud ‘I’ve no time for you.’ I’M the almighty in this realm! The Elder sounded indignant. ‘Do you know where Kain has gone then?’ Raziel asked him. Kain is not here? The Elder sounded surprised. ‘Some god.’ Raziel shook his head and made to jump through the portal. Wait! The Elder called after him ‘What is it now?’ Raziel’s patience was waning ‘I have no time to waste.’ Seen Mobius anywhere? It asked With a final shake of his head Raziel jumped through the portal, the Elder god’s final words fading from his mind but still clear: Come back here you little… it called after him I really AM a god! I’ll prove it! The Elder’s voice faded into the darkness Just you wait and see! To be continued ^_^
