Chapter 1: Green things that bite..

Edith looked at the lunch in front of her. I hate cafeteria food... She sorely thought. She was eating by herself, for now, at least. Edith had Crystal-like eyes which changed periodically. Strait and naturally blond hair with small natural highlights. She wore rather concealing clothes for a sophomore girl, and her face was painted ever-so-mildly with acne. You could barely notice it, but because girls her age often wore ten pounds of make-up, other girls made fun of her constantly.

“Sorry I'm late!”Reen said as he sat down across the table from her. Reen was popular, but they had been friends since kinder-garden. Reen had shaggy chocolate hair that layered naturally, clear skin, green eyes, and a long tall build.
“What took you?” Edith asked.
“I'll give you three guesses.” he said half-smiling, like he always did when the answer was obvious.
“Kim?”
“Yup,” he responded biting into his tuna-fish sandwich. “I don't get why she won't leave me alone. I've told her flat out that I don't like her.”
“I did some research-”
“You mean, snooping.”
“Fine snooping,” Edith said as Reen half laughed. “Anyways I heard her bragging to her gang, saying 'He doesn't really mean it' or 'he's in denial like normal' or even 'he's just playing hard to get. He'll listen to destiny sooner or laterrr...' She even stressed the R part Reen!”
Reen Just smiled, “I'm sure she'll get it through her skull sometime soon...”
“What if she doesn't?”
“I'll get a restraining order against her, if your that worried, OK?” Reen said as he laughed.
Edith looked at him, “You need a woman my friend...”
she sighed.
“Hey, your birthday's in a couple of days right?”
Edith choked a bit. “What you remember?”
“Yeah, you are my B-E-S-T-F-R-I-E-N-D!!! After all you'll be sixteen, right?”
“Yeah. What of it?”
“And you've never gone on a date, right?”
Edith eyed him suspiciously, “YEAH, what of it?”
Before Reen could continue, he glanced over, “Uh-oh. Kimmie is back,” He said. “Just act natural. We don't know she's headed our way. Got it?”
Edith glanced over quickly, then shot back. She was coming! What were they going to do?

“So,” Reen began coolly. “I was thinking a movie and some fries... How does that sound, Ed?”
Kim neared in, but Edith saw his game. “Yeah, that sounds great. Is anyone else coming?”

Kim stopped and listened. “Na. I was thinking just the two of us. You know a-” He leaned in “Date?”

Reen had to of been joking! A date? Them, together! They were good friends, yeah... But as Bo and Gal? Oh well, he'd tell her what he really wanted to tell her after Kim was gone.
“S-sure...” Edith still stuttered. “I'd love to go out some time.”
Kim's mouth twisted up into a small scrunched up ball, then she smiled villainously and invaded Reen's personal-space. “Hey, Reenee...” She giggled. “Whatcha do'in?”
“Having lunch,” He responded bluntly.
“So what are you do'in this Sunday evening?”
“Going out with Ed.”
Kim's eye's narrowed at Edith with a perfect smile, then her eyes bounced back to Reen. “Who's that?” she pretended to ask. She knew perfectly well who Edith was.
“The girl you're ignoring right now.”
Kim glanced over at Edith and rested her chin on Reen's shoulder.
“Oh, her? But she's SOOOOO not your type!”
“We've seemed to get along perfectly well since Kinder-garden.”
“Trust me, a girl like that? She'll suck you dry... Like a vampire...” Kim purred. “She has no sex-appeal what so ever... Sickly thing...”
Edith's face turned all shades of red. “I'm right here you know.”
Kim looked at her with a playful expression, “Yeah, I know.”
All right. If that's the way you want to play. “What is your deal Kim?! Give the guy some air will ya?”
Reen looked surprised. Kim looked surprised. Edith wasn't.
“You stay out of my relationships and I'll stay out of yours, freak.”
“You're in one of mine right now!”
“Only cuz you took him.”
“Will you just back off? You treat men like toys.”
“Snotty slutt!”
“Jerk!”
“Zit-faced loser!”
“Fluzie!”
“Vampire wanna-be!”
Kim lunged across the table and grabbed Edith's hair, and the momentum made them both fall on the floor.
Kim pulled at Edith's hair like there was no tomorrow.
Edith discovered there was no way she could win under this much weight. Kim was strong, Athletic, and popular. She had long black hair, Tanned skin, she was a little bit on the heavy side, but still bossed around everyone like she was a queen. In a way she was. She was spoiled rotten, she threw parties all the time, failed all time and when she told her parents? She got grounded for a week. A WEEK! And then after about a week and a half she asked for a blackberry cell-phone,and got it the next day.

Edith lived alone, by herself in her apartment. Her real mom and dad got a divorce when she was two, but it was a sound “look-it's-not-working-let's-just-split-up.” one. She lived with her mom and her moms new boyfriend, Anthony, and spent every other weekend with her dad and Maria, her little sister.

Then, dad got in a car accident, and died. The night after the funeral, Anthony and Mom announced they now worked for the peace-corps now, and they would come back in three months. Till then they had to stay with there grandparents. They wrote a letter saying that they loved them and they were staying for a year now.
Soon disaster struck (again!) and Maria got in comma for reasons only god knows why!

So her grandparents moved her back into her families old apartment. They came by once a week with groceries till she was eight, then they came with the money for the groceries. Edith wasn't even taking drivers Ed. She rode the metro system in Webster, Texas.

Reen eventually pulled them apart. “What's with you two?!”
Edith and Kim didn't answer, they just stared a each other angrily.
“Come on, before the teachers figure out what happened!”
Reen's plea's were useless.
They both sat on opposite sides of Reen, not intending on eating.
“Come on guys!” there was no response. “I won't take either one of you out on a date if you guys don't say
sorry.”
Edith choked slightly, “Sorry, Kim.”
There was a pause of silence. “You better be!” Kim retorted. Before even Reen could snap back at her Kim stomped off in a huff.
“I'm serious Ed, that could have been the end of both of your school careers if a teacher found out about it.”
Edith sighed, “You're right. But man popular kids can be such jerks!”
Reen groaned slightly.
Edith looked at her half-eaten food. “So what were you going to ask me before Kim found you, anyway?”
“I already told you. Do YOU want to go out with ME on Sunday, your BIRTHDAY?”
Edith looked confused, “What???”
“You heard me. Or do you not want to go out?”
“No! I do but-”
“Well out with it.”
“It's kinda awkward... That's all...”
“Awkward how?”
“Well... Normally people who've known each other since practically birth, don't go out.”
Reen smiled “I don't see why not.” he looked at her, “If you're so worried 'bout it why not I ask you out differently?” Reen rummaged around in his pocket for awhile and withdrew a gold pendant that looked like a snake eating it's own tail. It was on an old rusty chain, but the pendant was shiny still.
“Cool, Reen where'd you get it?”
“Believe it or not a resale shop.”
Edith looked at it and discerned its beauty. Who would throw it out, though? Sure, its chain is like thread, but they could always find a new one.
“If you want it, then come have a good time with me at the movies.
Edith sighed, “Fine. I'll come with you.”
“Good girl,” Reen teased as he slid it off his hand into her own.
“You aren't even going to keep it till the end of the date?”
“I know you too well to run off at the last minute with the thing. You're too honest!”
Edith sympathetically slapped him lightly on the back of the head. “You fart!” she yelled sarcastically.
“Yup, that's me!” Reen said laughing. “The tumor that won't get off your back!” Reen looked up. “Wow, lunch is almost over! Can you believe it?” Reen looked at her food. “You done with that?” Edith nodded. “Good! I can take it and throw it away.” Reen picked up her lunch tray and ran off with it before she had a say in the matter.
Actually, the date might go well... She thought.
I mean it's not like I don't already know him, so we don't have to go through the a weird first date thing. Sides he's been on a few already. Even if it doesn't work it's not like they won't be friends anymore, right? Edith didn't want to continue school forever, but right now she had to get back from lunch without running into Kim again (With would prove interesting, because they had the same class together now)
There was a tug on the back of her shirt and then a tug on her ear as she and Kim were being lead by a sub.
Edith saw Reen cringe as the teacher passed him.
He shrugged, Edith knew he couldn't help now at least...

The teacher lead them to the electric room, where he then released them so hard that they landed on the ground with a thud!
Kim got up almost immediately. “She started it.”
“Kim, that's a bull-faced lie, and you know it!”

“SILENCE!” the teacher yelled. The teachers speech was slurred and snake-like, and the tone was icy!
Oh, crap! We're really in trouble!!! Edith thought. We're so dead! The teacher looked around for something, and then looked at her and Kim with a smug look and yellow, glowing eyes. “I've done it! I've finally done it! Sixteen years of searching and planning, and it's finally payed off! I found not one, no I'm too smart for one, but TWO!!!”
Edith looked at Kim, “There was another fight?”
“Listen teach,” Kim pleaded in her most sweet fake voice. “You got the ONE student, I had nothing to do with it!”

The teacher drew back his hand so fast Edith didn't see it. In a moment, Kim was on her side screaming bloody murder. He slapped her?! That's extreme, even for Kim!
Silence, fool!” Edith could see that cracks that looked like lava-flow were coming from his eyes. The teacher actually began to look less and less like a teacher with every passing second. “Only question is-” it grabbed both of their shirts and grappled them up high. “Which one has the necklace?” it lifted Kim up higher. “You like jewelry. Do you not, wench?
Edith remembered the necklace Reen had given to her.
Or do you have it, girl?” it said shaking Edith around.
“Necklace? You want a necklace? I'll give you a ton if you let me go!”
The monster focused it's gaze on Kim rather than Ed.
Maybe I can... Edith fiddled in her pocket. Maybe if I can get the chain off the medallion, I can fool him! Edith finally found the switch. Come on you piece of junk, work! Edith finally latched it off and crumpled it into her hands.
“The necklace you're looking for, does it have an old chain and a pendant of a snake?”She asked half gasping for air.
The thing's eyes met hers and it smiled. “Ah...” it sighed “You know of it? Good you speak the truth, girl... Where is it?” It sniffed. “You have it don't you?...” it watched Edith's hand raise.
“Here, You want it?” Edith tossed it toward some pipes. “Go get it!”
It dropped Edith and Kim on the spot, as it went to retrieve the chain Edith grabbed the pendant. Kim looked at her, “Just give it to him!” she screamed as she tried to yank it from Edith's hands.
No way. Not in a million years! Ed thought. He-it what ever! Wants it for something! I don't want to stick around to find out what either!
The thing circled back, obviously realizing it was duped.
Kim groaned, “Just give it to him so we can find somewhere safe, already!”
Edith blanked out after that.
