Part 4
The Dark Ages
| We ran towards the swamp, towards Vorador’s Mansion. I doubt if Vorador
would help us. In the recent past he showed that he’s not very interested
in conquering the world and wipe out the human race. He helped Kain with
his plan and his strategy but that was all; as the army begin to march
against the armies of the Sarafan, Vorador went back to his swamp and remained
there, not a bit interested who would win the battle. I thought he wouldn’t
let us in his home in. At least that was wrong.
The Sarafan were not hunting us. On our journey we met several patrols of them but we could avoid them. Now we had to make our way through the swamp. Even this form of wet ground did hurt a vampire. The older ones had a resistance against it but I was still too young to have such a resistance. So we had to walk on the hard parts of the swamp. Unfortunately there were not much of them. Our group lost two vampires to the swamp. They died in horrible agony. But at last we stood in front of Vorador’s Mansion, a huge palast in the heart of the swamp. The gate was open and so we walked trough it. All was quiet. We heard absolutely nothing only the wind whispering through the rooms. Then suddenly a hurling sword flew toward me. I dodged it with a jump backward and prepared myself for a fight. Female vampires jumped from the balconies and the ledges. They attacked very fast and in the very last moment I brought up my arm and blocked her punch with my arm. She made a side-step and took her sword. The other brides attacked my vampiric brothers. I wanted to strike but the vampire made another side-step and slashed with her sword. She hit me in my flank but I turned around quickly ignoring the pain coming form the deep wound. I punched, aiming to her face and she blocked it with the sword. We fought a long time but no one hit the other. Suddenly a loud and strong voice shouted: “Enough of this!!!” We all looked up like one person and on a balcony we saw Vorador standing. “Well, so far has it come. Vampires versus vampires. Aren’t the Sarafan enough?” The female vampire sank her sword and spoke to Vorador. “Excuse us, Vorador but these vampires are intruders and they brought the Sarafan in our swamp.” “Did you see them?” Vorador asked. “Well, no. But I’m sure they will come soon. These vampires came from the battle against the Sarafan Lord.” “What? Bring them to me.” And so he saved us from the death. We sat down in Vorador’s dining room and drank blood. Then he wanted to know what has happened on the battlefield. He had saw Kain’s corpse and it interested him how the great vampire had fallen. I told him the whole story. As I finished he thought about it. No one dared to speak or to make a noise because it would interrupt Vorador. After some time he started: “So, the Soul Reaver is in the hands of the Sarafan Lord?” “Yes. I personally saw as he took and wield it!” I answered. “And Kain was stroke down by the sword of the Lord?” Vorador stood up and walked to Kain’s body. He examined him and then he said: “He’s not dead. The strike did not kill him. He is in a kind of coma. We must wait until he wakes up!” I was happy that he wasn’t dead but we had to make a plan where we will hide. “My Mansion is not safe enough. In time the Sarafan will get through the swamp and find us. We must find a other retreat.” “But where?” a vampire asked. “It sounds idiotic but in Meridian we would be much safer than here. The Sarafan wouldn’t search us in their own city.” Vorador was correct like so many times before. But the main problem was to get into the capital. “As I were a human,” a Vampire began,” my friends and I had find a secret passage into the lower city of Meridian. It leads to an old shop named “Blue Lady Curios”. There is a gigantic hall under it… a perfect place to hide.” Vorador raises an eyebrow. “So, then we got to find this entrance and see if you are right.” Vorador and his brides made themselves ready to go south. The name of the female vampire who had attack me was Umah. She was the most gifted of Vorador’s brides. Together we got out of the swamp and were heading to Meridian. Vorador knew many shortcuts to the southern Lake. In the half of the normally time we arrived at the city. The vampire searched for the passage and finally found it. It was a dark and wet place but we had to walk trough it ignoring the pain that came to us. After a very long time we got to the exit of the passage. As we stepped out of it we were in a grand hall. Vorador looked around and said: “Well, I think this is good… this will become our Sanctuary!” 200 Years later:
