Part 2
The Gift
| Winter’s hard in Nosgoth. Arctic Winds and the pure, white snow come
from the furthest plains of Nosgoth. As a Vampire you aren’t afflected
by the cold temperatures… you must only fear the snowfall. I was young
and weak, sunlight harmed me and even one drop of rain melt deep into my
skin. Magnus taught me to be very careful until I grow stronger. He was
like a father to me after all.
Long time we stayed in the southern regions of Nosgoth to avoid the snow and the rain. But then I decided to go a last time to Vasserbünde… for a last visit. “Alright, Christo. Go to your hometown. I will wait for you on the path south to it. Make it fast; I want that you encounter “him”, our Lord!” So we travelled north. The day was sunless. Perfect for going into the town at day. As I went trough the streets I recognised many faces but they didn’t. I must have changed so much that they didn’t even looked at me, asking themselves: “Hmm… where do I know this guy from?” I stopped as I saw a few men, standing at the wall of a tavern. They wore a body-armor from head to toe, no helmet but their mouths were behind a mask. Their hair were completely cut off and they held a large sword in their hands. I thought one word: Sarafan! My heart were beating so fast that I thought it would jump out of my chest. In the middle of the group stood another Sarafan probably the leader of these Guards. But he was different; he wore a more massive armor than the others. And a helmet. The armor were grey and blue as steel. But some parts were light yellow. Could this be gold? I did one more step forward to see better; a big mistake. Suddenly the yellow parts were glowing like the sun and the Sarafan looked around. He pointed at me because I were the only one at the entire place. Then he ordered the other Sarafan to get me. So I started to run! The Sarafan hunted me through the whole town. I were faster than they but they were smarter; the entrance to the village, an old bridge, was barricaded by the Sarafan. I ran into a small passage and turned around. “Ha, you’re trapped, Vampire!” “Hit him hard, David!” The Sarafan wanted to strike me with his sword… it was like a reflex. I blocked the strike with my left arm and opened my right hand. Then I punched it trough the Sarafan’s body. As I got my hand out the Sarafan fell to the ground. First slowly then faster I started again to run. The Sarafan, now filled with wrath, ran after me. I turned right into a dark alley; a dead end! I looked at the Sarafan. They searched with their eyes after me but find nothing… I stood in front of them! Didn’t they see me? “Where’s he?” Where’s he going?” “I saw him running into this dead end. This couldn’t be!” Then I understood. This was my dark gift. In the cold, dark shadow I can find shelter in times of being hunted. I can fuse with the darkness! The Sarafan walked away without finding me. With my gift I got out of the town and to Magnus who were waiting for a long time. “There you are! I thought you died!” I told him about my fight with the Sarafan and about my dark gift. He was impressed that I had such an powerful ability. After that we got to the Pillars. In front of Kain’s stronghold he said to me: “You go alone to Kain. I’ve got one more thing to do!” He disappeared to the south. I didn’t know what he was going to do. Later I discovered what he did… what he was trying to do. This fool! Kain sat on his throne surrounded by his Generals; in his hands his magnificent sword… the ancient Soul Reaver. He was angry. He thought Magnus didn’t want to fight against the Sarafan. “Sarafan? Why Sarafan? Are they trying to attack us?” I asked. Kain grinned. In the same moment Vorador walked in. Kain stood up and got to a small table in the middle of the hall. He and Vorador were looking at a map… a map of Nosgoth. “We’re going to attack!” Kain said as he pointed at Meridian on the map.
